Discover the Splendor of the Venetian Republic
The Doge’s Palace in Venice

Step into the history of one of the world’s most fascinating cities: The Doge’s Palace (Palazzo Ducale), located in the heart of Venice, is more than just a magnificent building – it is a symbol of power, art, and the political brilliance of the former maritime republic.
A Glimpse into the Past
The origins of the Doge’s Palace date back to the 9th century. Originally built as a fortress, it evolved over the centuries into the seat of government for the Doges – the elected rulers of Venice. Within these walls, laws were made, secret verdicts were passed, and international politics were conducted. The structure we see today, with its striking Venetian Gothic style, was largely completed in the 14th and 15th centuries.

Today – A Living Museum
Today, the Doge’s Palace is a stunning museum that attracts visitors from around the world. Marvel at intricately painted ceilings by Tintoretto and Veronese, gilded council chambers, and hidden passages of justice. Walk through the famous prison and cross the legendary Bridge of Sighs, which once led convicted prisoners to their cells.

The Two Red Columns at the Doge’s Palace
The two red columns of the Doge’s Palace are located in the loggia facing the Piazzetta – that is, the side with the arches that opens toward St. Mark’s Square and the lagoon.

Meaning of the Red Columns:
In the upper arcade of the Doge’s Palace, two of the columns – roughly in the center of the façade – are pinkish-red, while all the others are white or light gray.
These two columns mark a site of special historical significance:
- It was from here that the Doge proclaimed important judgments and decrees of the Republic of Venice.
- The space between the two red columns served as the “official place of proclamation,” similar to an ancient balcony of power.
- According to tradition, death sentences and especially severe decisions were publicly announced from this spot.
- It is also said that executions took place in the square below – not between the columns, but within view, to shock the public while keeping the space of proclamation „pure.“
Symbolism:
The reddish coloring visually highlights this area and subtly points to the gravity and bloodshed of some of the decisions made or announced there. At the same time, red in Venice symbolizes power, dignity, and public authority.
